Cable Probes

Cable probes are compact resistance temperature detector (RTD) or thermocouple (TC) assemblies that use a non‑removable, flexible connection cable rather than a rigid extension head. The sensing element is housed in a small metal sheath that is in direct contact with the process medium, supporting rapid heat transfer and short response times. Configurations range from plug-in styles with no process connection to versions with compression fittings, threaded connections, weld‑on pads or bayonet locks, and are offered with different sheath and cable materials to match temperature range and media compatibility.

A key advantage is installation freedom. The flexible lead can be routed around obstructions, through tight enclosures, or into moving equipment where rigid assemblies are difficult to mount. Cable probes also suit measuring points with limited space and locations where the sensor must bend to reach the true measurement position without imposing stress on the sensing tip, reducing the temptation to compromise on insertion depth or placement.

Material selection drives durability and measurement stability. Sheath and cable jacket materials are chosen for chemical exposure, moisture ingress risk, and mechanical abrasion, and can be paired with appropriate insulation, shielding, and termination hardware. With the right construction, cable probes can be applied in vibration‑prone machinery, high‑pressure service, or cryogenic environments while maintaining dependable electrical performance over longer lead lengths.

Common applications include machinery and OEM skids, HVAC and utility systems, storage temperature monitoring, laboratory and test equipment, autoclaves, and bearing temperature measurement. They are also used where surface temperature must be captured on a reactor or vessel without adding bulky hardware, and where temporary or repositionable measurements are helpful during startup, performance testing, or troubleshooting.

Specification typically centers on sensor type (RTD vs TC), accuracy class, response time, insulation/shielding, termination style, and the integrity of any process seal. Proper strain relief and cable routing reduce lead fatigue and moisture intrusion, while thoughtful placement minimizes conduction errors and improves repeatability in dynamic thermal conditions.
