Coriolis Mass Flowmeters

Coriolis mass flowmeters measure flow by detecting the Coriolis forces that arise when a fluid moves through one or more vibrating tubes. As mass flows, the oscillating tube set experiences a measurable phase shift that is directly proportional to mass flow rate. Tube frequency provides density, and integrated sensing supports temperature compensation and reporting, enabling true multivariable measurement from a single primary device.

Because the measurement is fundamentally tied to mass and tube dynamics, Coriolis technology delivers high repeatability across wide process conditions without relying on Reynolds-number correlations or a stable velocity profile. By combining mass flow, density, and temperature, additional values can be calculated to support tighter control, including volumetric flow, solids content, concentration in multiphase fluids, and standard density scales such as °Brix and °API where appropriate.

A key advantage in real plants is the ability to keep measurement uncertainty low when fluid properties vary with recipe, temperature, or source. Coriolis meters are commonly selected for batching, blending, and continuous dosing where fast response and accurate totals prevent giveaway and reduce off‑spec material. Many installations can also be simplified because straight-run requirements can be minimal and inlet/outlet conditioning is typically not required for performance.

Typical applications include custody transfer and allocation, additive injection, reactor feeds, loading/unloading skids, and high-value chemical or petrochemical services. The same technology is used across a broad range of liquids and gases - from fuels and crude oil to solvents, cleaners, food products, and liquefied gases - supporting both hygienic transfer and demanding hydrocarbon measurement where density tracking adds value.

Selection focuses on line size and allowable pressure drop, expected phase behavior (entrained gas, flashing, or solids), and the required measurement outputs. When paired with verification features, diagnostics, and digital communications, Coriolis meters can support condition-based maintenance and disciplined metrology programs, helping sustain measurement integrity over time while limiting calibration disruption.
